About The Role

GEL currently has an opening for an internship primarily focused on structural engineering in South Carolina.

Based in our Charleston, SC office, the position will work closely with our engineers to assist with performing condition assessments and structural inspections, document observations in a thorough, legible, and methodical manner, prepare reports, which include photo documentation that summarize site observations, perform inspections of structures including buildings, waterfront facilities, municipal infrastructure, bridges, and special structures, perform structural analysis and design for rehabilitation and strengthening of existing facilities and new design of industrial and municipal structures, perform construction oversight and field documentation, and coordinate design efforts with various other professional disciplines including site/civil, geotechnical, surveying, hydrogeological, and environmental. The candidate must also be willing to learn CAD to assist with design and construction plan development.

The majority of work time will be focused in the office environment. However, field work and inspections will also be required. The employee may occasionally need to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. May occasionally lift and carry items that weigh over 20 pounds.

Required Qualifications

  • Current student in the process of acquiring a BS degree in Civil Engineering or closely related field of study
  • Must have strong communication skills, and be self-motivated, organized, flexible, and able to work both independently and with a project team to completion of tasks
  • A valid driver's license and safe driving record is required
  • Must satisfy test results as part of GEL's drug-free workplace policy
  • Must be willing to travel/perform field work
  • Preference will be given to local candidates
