DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The UC National Laboratories (UCNL) at the University of California Office of the President (UCOP) has governance and prime contract administration responsibility for Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) and represents UC's management of limited liability companies (LLCs) responsible for Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). As a key partner in the Lawrence Livermore National Security, LLC (LLNS) and the Triad National Security, LLC, UCNL is responsible for governance and oversight of the Labs and has responsibility for assuring excellence in science, technology and engineering and mission execution underpinned by excellence in business and operations. UC has sole responsibility for LBNL and UCNL leads in assuring all aspects of contract administration, mission execution and operations. The University of California Livermore Collaboration Center (UCLCC) is a newly renovated collaboration space managed by UCNL for meetings and programs, located in Livermore, CA, adjacent to LLNL.

POSITION SUMMARY

UCNL seeks an advanced undergraduate or graduate student interested in applying their talents and interests in communications (technical and general), and marketing in the areas of cutting-edge research at the UC campuses and national laboratories, as well as the operational aspect of planning and reporting/publicizing programs executed at the Center. The intern will play an important role in increasing UCLCC's visibility and purpose with the development of interesting stories and exciting opportunities for collaboration that enhance the UC community's understanding of UCLCC resources and the breadth of possibilities.

The intern will gain knowledge and exposure to UC affiliated national labs (LLNL, LBNL, LANL), UC campuses, medical centers and the Agriculture and Natural Resources program.

Responsibilities

50% Develop and Write Communication Materials: Conduct interviews and write news articles for the UCLCC website; create marketing collateral and other communication materials (technical and general), as needed.

  • Work with all levels of administrative, management, and or scientific/technical staff at the UCNL and UC-affiliated Laboratories to contribute to story development and content creation and communicate various topics, including science and technology, to a wide range of technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Drafts simple news releases, routine statements, and brief articles.
  • Contribute to the creation of social media and other digital content.
  • Write professional-quality, factually correct articles that explain concepts in science and technology to the public following standard journalistic style. Interpret technical subject matter and translate into various, easily understandable forms (e.g., web copy, online newsletters, flyers, presentations).
  • May perform basic HTML editing using text editors and content management systems in WordPress.

25% Data Collection:

  • Gather news and information about UC and UC National Laboratories programs.
  • Compile and organize content such as clippings, media placements, including location information such as photographs, statistics, and reports.

15% Support Daily Operations of the Center:

  • Work closely with the Executive Director for Partnerships and Outreach and the Administrative Operations Coordinator at the Center to support client interactions, room reservations, and event preparation. May assist with organizing social functions in coordination with other organizations.

10% Mentorship and Networking:

  • Meet with UCNL Leadership and team members to gain professional development skills. Opportunity to gain mentorship from seasoned staff members with UC and National Laboratory experience. Opportunities to connect and engage with fellow UCOP and LLNL interns.

Experience:

Currently enrolled University of California undergraduate or graduate student

Required Qualifications

Some experience planning, developing, organizing, and writing content effectively across various types of communication platforms, including the Web.

Some experience and knowledge of social media and digital tools and their application in professional/business/academic environments.

Good knowledge and understanding of all aspects of communications.

Good written and verbal communications, active listening, and political acumen skills, with a drive for quality control and excellence.

Basic knowledge of and familiarity with social media communications tools and strategies, and familiarity with basic marketing and content strategy concepts and tools.

Good interpersonal and customer service skills to communicate effectively and tactfully with all levels of staff, faculty, and external constituencies.

Ability to work both independently and within a team to meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment, while managing competing priorities.

Experience using computer applications such as Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Adobe products, Zoom or ability to quickly learn new systems and applications. Some knowledge of Web content management systems (WordPress) preferred.

Basic knowledge of the UC system preferred, including the National Laboratories, and its mission, and goals.

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range shows the growth potential for this position and the pay scale is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position.

Position is full-time, Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm, onsite in Livermore, CA. Some travel to Oakland for meetings will be required.
